Jamshedpur: A heart-wrenching road accident on the Goelkera–Chakradharpur stretch of NH-320D claimed the lives of an uncle and his nephew on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred near Asantaliya School under Sonua police station area when an unidentified speeding vehicle collided head-on with their motorcycle and fled the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Padlochan Mahato (65), a resident of Gajpur village, and his nephew Subhash Chandra Mahato (28) of Hathiya village in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.
According to reports, the duo had travelled to Chakradharpur earlier in the day for medical treatment and were returning home when tragedy struck.
The impact of the collision was so severe that Subhash Mahato died on the spot, while Padlochan Mahato, who sustained grievous injuries, was rushed to the Sonua Community Health Centre with the help of local residents.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment.
The double fatality has plunged both families and their villages into mourning.
Upon receiving information, Sonua police arrived at the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered against the unidentified driver, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding vehicle.
Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the culprit.
Local residents expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents on the Goilkera–Chakradharpur route, blaming reckless driving for repeated tragedies.
They have urged the administration to enforce strict speed regulations and take firm steps to prevent further loss of lives.
