Jamshedpur: Tragedy struck on Sunday morning as two boys drowned into the swollen Kharkai river along the Jugsalai police station area.
The victims were brothers and were identified as Mohammed Afridi and Mohammed Altaf, both residents of Garib Nawaz Colony in Jugsalai.
The victims had gone to the river for brining sands as they had some repairing work to be done at their house.
According to relatives, the younger brother Altaf forced his brother to go to the river for bringing some more sand.
But as Altaf was collecting sand from the water, he slipped into the river and and started drowning. Altaf screamed for help, prompting Afridi to jump into the water for saving his brother, but the next moment both the brothers drowned.
Though they were rescued by the local people and rushed to the Tata Main Hospital but the doctors on TMH’s emergency duty declared them as brought dead. Subsequently, the police had seized the bodies and sent them to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem.
Circle inspector of Jugsalai police station, Arun Kumar Mishra said that the tragedy occurred as the younger brother had insisted on bringing more sands from the swollen river. The victims’ father Nausad, who earned a living by running a fruits shop at Jugsalai, is in deep shock.
