Trump Defiant After White House Shooting

“The Most Impactful People Are Targeted”

Washington: Reflecting on a narrow brush with violence, U.S. President Donald Trump described the presidency as a “dangerous profession” following a shooting incident near the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday. Despite the threat, Trump vowed that “sick people” would not be allowed to change the fabric of American life.

“I Fought Like Hell to Stay”

In a late-night interaction at the White House, the President recounted the rapid sequence of events. While security protocols eventually forced an evacuation, Trump admitted he was reluctant to leave the venue. “I fought like hell to stay,” he told reporters, explaining his desire to show that violence would not deter the administration’s work.

Trump noted that while he initially mistook the gunfire for a falling tray, the First Lady recognized the danger immediately. He praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for their “incredible” coordination, noting that the gunman was intercepted at a distance and never breached the immediate secure area.

The Price of Impact

Addressing the recurring nature of threats against his life, Trump offered a philosophical take on the risks of leadership.

  • On Targets: “I’ve studied assassinations,” Trump remarked. “The most impactful people—the people who make the biggest impact—they are the ones they go after.”

  • On Resilience: While acknowledging the “traumatic” nature of the event for his family, he dismissed the idea of scaling back public engagements. “If you want to do a great job, it comes with the territory.”

A Call for Unity

The President confirmed that the administration will not cancel future events, announcing plans to reschedule the correspondents’ dinner within 30 days. He concluded with a rare appeal for bipartisanship, citing the unified resolve he witnessed in the room immediately after the shots were fired.

“We have to resolve our differences,” he said, calling on Republicans, Democrats, and independents to work together. “I take it as it is. I do it for the country.”
