Truck spills tomatoes on NH 18 near Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, May 22: A truck loaded with containers and tomatoes overturned near Ghutia village in the Galudih police station area of East Singhbhum district, causing chaos on NH 18.

The mishap occurred when a container and a truck collided while overtaking on Wednesday. The impact caused the truck, laden with tomatoes, to overturn in the middle of the NH 18 four-lane highway, while the container veered off into a nearby field. Tomatoes were strewn across the highway, prompting bystanders to collect them.

The commotion led to a partial blockage of NH 18, causing inconvenience to commuters. Upon receiving information, Galudih police station in-charge Kumar Indresh rushed to the scene. The driver, Sunil Yadav, sustained serious injuries, including a broken hand, while his assistant, Raju Yadav, suffered head injuries. Both were promptly taken to the sub-divisional hospital for medical attention.

Efforts to clear the highway were initiated, with the NHAI team tasked with resolving the traffic jam. The road remained blocked for approximately three hours, during which vehicles were diverted to the other lane. SDO Sachidanand Mahato, en route to a meeting in Jamshedpur, halted at the site to assess the situation. He was informed by injured Raju Yadav that the truck was transporting 25 tonnes of tomatoes worth Rs 8 lakh from Delhi to Bhubaneswar.
