Jamshedpur, Sept 26: In a heart-wrenching mishap on National Highway-18, three lives were snuffed out when a speeding car rammed into a slow-moving trailer at Jharia Mode under Baharagora police station limits in the early hours of Friday. The deceased have been identified as Ganesh Ray (50), a Calcutta resident who was behind the wheel, along with Kushumita Patnaik (55) and her daughter Monika Patnaik (28), both residents of Kadma, Jamshedpur. The victims were returning from Kolkata when the tragedy struck.
According to preliminary police investigations, the trailer was negotiating a U-turn at the Jharia Mode roundabout when the ill-fated car, allegedly being driven at a breakneck speed, collided head-on with the heavy vehicle. Officers suspect the driver may have momentarily dozed off, losing control in top gear, which proved fatal.Police teams rushed to the accident site immediately after receiving information and shifted the grievously injured trio to Baharagora Community Health Centre, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Later, their bodies were moved to Ghatsila Sub-Divisional Hospital for postmortem examination.
The trailer driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot, leaving investigators to trace his whereabouts.
This tragic incident once again underscores the perils of reckless driving and fatigue-induced lapses on highways, turning an ordinary journey into a devastating catastrophe.
