Jamshedpur, Sept 29: Panic broke out on Monday morning at the Mango bridge when a tomato-laden truck suddenly suffered a brake failure.
With heavy festive crowds on the roads due to Durga Puja, the situation could have turned catastrophic. However, the driver’s quick thinking averted a major tragedy.
Eyewitnesses said the truck’s brakes stopped working abruptly while it was approaching a congested stretch, with dense traffic and crowds ahead.
Realizing the potential danger, the driver immediately steered the vehicle to the wrong side and rammed it into a hydra machine stationed for bridge construction work.
The impact was loud and alarming, but fortunately, no one was injured.
As the incident unfolded, chaos gripped the area. Before police could intervene, an enraged mob caught hold of the driver and began assaulting him.
Traffic police personnel and officers on duty quickly rushed to the spot, rescued the driver from the crowd, and handed him over to Mango police station.
Police officials confirmed that the driver’s alertness prevented a major accident. Given the festive rush, with thousands of people on the roads, the runaway truck could have caused severe casualties.
The truck has been seized, and an investigation is underway.
