We want to work green environment . Now anybody can lodge a complaint on issues related to environment pollution, be it river pollution or air pollution on the toll free number or upload photograph of the pollution along with the location on the whatsapp number.

We will work to ensure that it is addressed, said Saryu Roy. The toll free number is 1800-1233-54000, email nfpgms@gmail.com and whatsapp 7482025022 at the Circuit House this evening.

The minister further said that from tomorrow the organisation Nature Foundation would also start a drive in schools and other educational institutions in the state for environment friendly Saraswati Puja.

We have decided to approach schools and Colleges through the organisation to only use clay in the construction of idol of Goddess and also avoid using synthetic colours on the idols.

This apart educational institutions would also be requested to create awareness amongst students that they should take out decorative items on idols including plastic and other paraphernalia before immersion so that water bodies are not polluted. This will continue till Saraswati Puja, said Roy.

He also said that he has already written to the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board and secretary industry K Ravikumar to make it mandatory for industrial units to install real time air data monitoring stations at places where there are large number of industries or on roads which witness heavy vehicle movement.

An official said that they would take up the issue of cleaning and developing the Subernarekha ghats with the district administration so that the immersion of the idols is held in a clean environment.

Several artisans who are busy making idols in the city should using mashed waste paper with natural clay and ‘multani mitti’ to make the idols.

Eco-friendly statues have long been available in Kolkata. However, this is something new for us. Big idols tend to be less eco-friendly as plaster of paris is needed to make them along with synthetic colours, said a senior functionary.

He went to add that it is important to keep religious sentiments aside and look at the issue from the environmental perspective. People should favour eco-friendly idols so that religious occasions are not bad for the environment.
