BJP Taps Aditya Sahu to Rebuild Jharkhand Unit After 2024 Poll Setback

Ranchi: The Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to hand over the reins of its Jharkhand unit to MP and Working President Aditya Sahu, signalling a major organisational and political reset after its setback in the 2024 Assembly elections.

With only one nomination filed for the post of State President, Sahu’s elevation is virtually certain and reflects clear backing from the party’s central leadership. The formal announcement is scheduled for January 14.

Sahu will succeed Babulal Marandi, who is now serving as Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, marking a deliberate separation between organisational leadership and legislative responsibility.

The move is widely seen as part of the BJP’s post-election course correction, allowing Marandi to concentrate on Assembly strategy while Sahu focuses on rebuilding the party’s grassroots network and political momentum.

Politically, Sahu’s rise carries added significance as he is an OBC leader, reinforcing the BJP’s renewed outreach to backward class voters, a segment that has drifted away from the party in recent years.

By placing him at the helm of the state unit, the BJP appears to be recalibrating its social and electoral strategy ahead of future contests in Jharkhand. Union Minister and BJP State Election Officer Juel Oram confirmed that Sahu was the sole nominee for the post.

His nomination was proposed by Marandi and MP Vidyut Baran Mahato, and supported by senior leaders including former Chief Minister Arjun Munda and Union Minister Annapurna Devi, indicating broad consensus within the party.

Alongside the State President’s post, the BJP has also received 21 nominations for its National Council from Jharkhand, featuring a mix of senior and emerging leaders such as Karia Munda, Marandi, Arjun Munda, Raghubar Das, Champai Soren, Madhu Koda, Sanjay Seth and Dineshanand Goswami, reflecting an attempt to balance continuity with change.

The formal declaration of the new State President and National Council members will be made on January 14 at 2 pm in Ranchi.
