Jamshedpur, September 25: Tata Main Hospital (TMH) has achieved a pioneering milestone in pediatric surgery by successfully repairing a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) in a two-day-old newborn—a condition where the intestine, spleen, and part of the liver enter the chest, severely affecting breathing.
Led by Dr. Shishir Kumar, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, TMH performed the surgery using a minimally invasive technique, making only three small holes in the baby’s chest. This first-of-its-kind procedure in Jharkhand restored normal anatomy and relieved pressure on the lungs, ensuring a smooth recovery.

The groundbreaking surgery demonstrates TMH’s advanced capabilities in pediatric care and offers new hope for critically ill newborns in the region. Such expertise is typically available only at a few premier centers across India.
Over the past three years, TMH has conducted more than 800 pediatric surgeries, backed by cutting-edge infrastructure and a dedicated team of surgeons and anesthetists. The hospital aims to establish itself as the leading center for pediatric surgery in Jharkhand.
The successful operation also reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to world-class healthcare, aligning with its vision of “WE ALSO MAKE TOMORROW” by providing advanced medical care and innovative solutions for children in need.
This landmark achievement places TMH at the forefront of pediatric surgical excellence in the state, setting new benchmarks for child healthcare.
