Drought Looms Over East Singhbhum: June Rainfall Plummets to Just 55.2 mm Against Normal 247.8 mm

Jamshedpur: A weak monsoon has triggered widespread fears of an imminent drought across the East Singhbhum district. According to official meteorological data recorded up to June 20, the district has received a meager 55.2 mm of rainfall, standing in stark contrast to the historical seasonal average of 247.8 mm for this period. With total precipitation falling below even one-fourth of the normal mark, the local farming community is deeply distressed over the fate of their seasonal crops.

The severe lack of rainfall is expected to hit paddy (rice) cultivation hardest, particularly threatening agricultural yields in the Chakulia and larger Ghatshila subdivisions. In response to the growing crisis, the district administration has entered high-alert mode and actively initiated emergency drought-mitigation protocols.

Deficit Spreads Across All Blocks

The agricultural shortfall is a uniform crisis across the region, impacting every single block within East Singhbhum. While Chakulia recorded 143.6 mm and Baharagora saw 63.0 mm of rainfall, all other blocks have languished around a critical low of just 50 mm, sparking serious concern among agrarian experts.

Administration Seeks 19,077 Quintals of Seeds for Alternative Farming

To prevent a total collapse of the Kharif cultivation cycle, the District Agriculture Department has submitted a comprehensive action plan to the state government. The department has officially requested an urgent supply of 19,077 quintals of specialized seeds tailored for low-water environments.

Once the seeds arrive, the administration will immediately launch a widespread distribution drive. Officials are already on the ground motivating farmers to adopt resilient alternative crops and modern water-efficient farming techniques to safeguard their livelihoods.

“We have placed an urgent requisition for seeds with the state government to tackle the looming drought. Once distributed, these seeds will provide farmers with reliable alternative cropping options. Alongside this, we are actively encouraging local communities to pivot toward advanced, climate-resilient agricultural practices.”

A Ray of Hope: Orange Alert Issued for Heavy Rainfall

Amidst the grim agricultural outlook, there is a glimmer of immediate relief on the horizon. While Sunday witnessed persistent cloud cover and light, scattered showers across various localities, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a positive turn in the weather.

The weather bureau has issued an Orange Alert for Monday, predicting heavy and widespread downpours across East Singhbhum and its adjoining districts, which officials hope will help bridge the massive seasonal water deficit.
