Thunderstorms, gusty winds lash Jamshedpur, stormy weather expected on May 21

Jamshedpur: Residents were caught off guard on Tuesday evening as thunderstorms accompanied by intense gusty winds swept through the city. Wind speeds reportedly reached 50–60 kmph, leading to brief power disruptions and affecting normal life in several areas.

The Jharkhand State Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory for May 21, warning of potentially severe weather conditions in multiple regions across the state. The forecast includes heavy rainfall in isolated pockets of north-eastern Jharkhand, heightening the risk of waterlogging, localized flooding, and temporary disruption to transport and daily activities.

According to the department, the unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist on Wednesday, although with slightly reduced intensity. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 40–50 kmph are likely to continue in isolated areas throughout the state.

The current spell of weather disturbance is linked to an east-west trough system extending from Punjab to north Bangladesh. This trough passes through Haryana, southern Uttar Pradesh, southern Bihar, and north Gangetic West Bengal, at an altitude of approximately 1.5 kilometers above mean sea level.

This system is enhancing convective activity, resulting in intense thunderstorms and localized downpours.  Residents are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open spaces, tall trees, and metallic structures. Farmers are advised to secure standing crops and take necessary precautions.

 Commuters should plan travel accordingly and stay updated on traffic advisories due to possible waterlogging or road blockages. Fishermen and outdoor workers are advised to exercise extreme caution and follow instructions from local authorities.
