Jamshedpur: To curb river pollution, three Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) will be constructed along the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers at a total cost of Rs 11.16 crore. The project, funded by the 15th Finance Commission, is scheduled to begin in the next financial year. The approved STPs include a 50 KLD plant in Hurlung, Birsanagar, at a cost of Rs 3.16 crore, a 1.2 MLD plant in Lalbhatta Bhuinyadih costing Rs 7.33 crore and a 0.2 MLD plant in Gandhi Ghat, which will be constructed for Rs 67 lakh. Once operational, these plants will ensure that wastewater from drains is treated before being discharged into the rivers.

Jamshedpur NAC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar stated that the DPR draft for a fourth STP in Moharda has already been submitted to the Urban Development Department for approval. “We were initially set to begin construction in September 2024, but administrative delays pushed the timeline,” he added.

As part of a larger initiative, 40 STPs will be developed across the city, with Jusco taking responsibility for 12 plants, JNAC for 20 and Mango Municipal Corporation for 8. In the second phase, treatment plants are planned for several locations, including Sonari Domuhani, Gandhi Ghat, Pandey Ghat, Sidhgora, Jugsalai Shiva Ghat and Mango Kunwar Basti, among others. Authorities have confirmed that once technical approval is received, work on the Moharda STP will commence without further delay.
