Unknown Entrepreneur Mohini Mohan Dutta Bequeathed ₹500 Crore
Mumbai/Jamshedpur: When the will of Ratan Naval Tata (RNT) was recently unsealed, it revealed an unexpected name among the usual beneficiaries—Mohini Mohan Dutta, a relatively unknown entrepreneur from Jamshedpur. According to a leading business daily, Dutta has been left an estimated ₹500 crore from Tata’s personal estate, making him one of the most surprising heirs in the final chapter of India’s most revered business icon.
Even within Tata’s close circles, Dutta’s inclusion in the will has raised eyebrows. The question on everyone’s mind: Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta, and what role did he play in Ratan Tata’s life?
A Bond Forged in Jamshedpur
Dutta, now in his 80s, first met Tata in the early 1960s in Jamshedpur. Their connection was forged at the Dealers’ Hostel when Ratan Tata was just 24 and beginning his journey in the Tata empire. Recalling their first meeting, Dutta said at Ratan Tata’s funeral in October 2024, “We first met at the Dealers’ Hostel in Jamshedpur when Ratan was 24. He helped me out and really built me up.”
What began as a chance meeting transformed into a lifelong association, with Dutta remaining a trusted figure in Tata’s life. He began his career with the Taj Group before launching Stallion Travel Agency, which merged with Taj Services—a division of the Taj Group of Hotels—in 2013. Tata Industries held an 80% stake in the business, which was later acquired by Tata Capital and subsequently sold to Thomas Cook (India). The agency now operates as TC Travel Services, where Dutta still serves as a director.
Trusted Confidant and ‘Adopted Son’
To some, Dutta was more than a business partner—he was a confidant and a close ally. Insiders have even referred to him as Tata’s “adopted son,” although Ratan Tata never legally adopted any children or married.
Dutta’s connection with the Tata family runs deep. His daughter worked with Tata Trusts for nearly a decade after starting her career with Taj Hotels. He was also an invited guest at the commemoration of Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary at Mumbai’s National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in December 2024, further solidifying his longstanding ties with the family.
Intrigue and Speculation
While the majority of Ratan Tata’s fortune is earmarked for charitable causes, Dutta’s significant windfall has sparked intrigue. His inclusion in the will, along with the decision of Tata’s half-sisters to donate their share to charity, has raised many questions.
Why did Tata single out Dutta for such a substantial share of his personal estate? What did Ratan Tata see in him that others may have overlooked? These questions linger, even as legal experts begin scrutinizing the distribution of the estate.
Dutta’s business ventures, which were closely aligned with Tata companies, likely played a role in Tata’s decision. His shares in Tata Group firms, including the soon-to-be-listed Tata Capital, position him as a notable figure in the business world.
The Final Chapter
Despite his years of association with Ratan Tata, Mohini Mohan Dutta has remained relatively unknown outside Tata’s inner circle—until now. With his name prominently mentioned in the will, he has emerged as a central figure in the Tata story’s final chapter.
As the spotlight shifts to Dutta, the broader implications for Tata’s legacy remain to be seen. For now, what is clear is that the Jamshedpur connection was more significant in Ratan Tata’s life than anyone could have imagined.
