The Legendary Shri Radha Krishna Temple of Seraikela

Seraikela, Sept 1: The ancient Shri Radha Krishna Mandir in Bada Kankra village is located about five kilometers from the town. It is enveloped in a mystical aura and is believed to have been established by divine will, as the exact date of its construction remains unknown. The temple houses black stone idols of Lord Krishna and Radha, which have withstood numerous theft attempts, with thieves inexplicably returning the sacred idols each time they stole them.

The temple is renowned for its supernatural history. Priests Nand Mishra and Lakhan Mishra recounted that until the 1960s, the temple’s morning hours were marked by the melodious sound of Lord Krishna’s flute, starting at 3:00 am. This captivating music, which resonated throughout the village, signaled the beginning of the day for local residents. However, after the temple dome suffered damage in the 1960s, the flute’s melody ceased, leaving behind a cherished memory.

The villagers continue to revere Lord Krishna by visiting the Shri Radha Krishna Mandir each morning, a ritual that begins with a bath in the ancient Chapa Pokhari pond. The pond itself is steeped in legend, with tales suggesting that it once provided ceremonial plates and glasses upon request. These items, if returned clean, were absorbed back into the pond, symbolizing a divine interaction with the sacred site.

Despite the rich spiritual heritage and stories of miracles associated with the temple and pond, the physical condition of the Shri Radha Krishna temple is deteriorating. The temple’s preservation is essential to maintain its historical and cultural significance. While local beliefs and stories add to its charm, it is imperative to address the structural issues to ensure the temple’s continued reverence and legacy.
