Jamshedpur, Dec 5: The Indian Railways is set to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems in trains plying through Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. This decision aims to curb accidents involving elephants that are frequently reported in these regions. A protective system is planned to be installed to prevent accidents involving trains. The Railway authorities have announced that this safeguard system will mitigate collisions between trains.
The plan includes implementing the protection system by March 2025. Additionally, an AI-based sensor system, known as the Elephant Sensor System, will be deployed around the railway tracks. This system will cover a stretch of 700 kilometers and aims to be operational within 7 to 8 months. The North East Frontier Railway has successfully implemented a similar strategy, leading to approval from the Ministry of Railways for its expansion to South East Railways.
The Elephant Sensor System functions by deploying sensors to detect elephant movements of these pachyderms within a range of 200 meters, triggering alarms for train drivers to reduce speed. The estimated cost for this initiative is around Rs 181 crore.
According to the Central Ministry of Environment, more than 200 elephants have died in the regions of Bengal, Assam, and Jharkhand over the past decade. The railway authorities aim to complete the implementation of this new safety system by mid-2024, emphasizing the urgency for the Security Department to initiate immediate action.
