Tatanagar Railway to Get ₹1.38 Crore Waste Disposal Plant To Curb Pollution

Jamshedpur

In a significant step towards improving urban sanitation and environmental sustainability, the South Eastern Railway (SER) has approved the construction of a modern waste disposal plant in the Tatanagar Railway Station area. Sanctioned on April 22, the project involves an investment of over ₹1.38 crore and is expected to transform waste management practices across the station and nearby railway colonies.

A scientific approach to waste management

At present, Tatanagar station and its adjoining colonies generate nearly 2.5 to 3 tonnes of waste daily. For years, a large portion of this waste has been dumped in open areas behind Central School premises, raising serious concerns about hygiene and environmental degradation.

The upcoming facility will introduce scientific waste processing methods, ensuring that garbage is treated and managed systematically instead of being left in open dumps or landfills. This initiative aims to significantly reduce pollution levels and improve overall cleanliness in the area.

Push from environmental oversight

The project follows a detailed review by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which recently assessed pollution control and environmental safety measures at the station. Acting on its observations, the Railways has strengthened its approach by introducing a dedicated Environment and Housekeeping Management (EnHM) department.

This specialized wing will be responsible for maintaining sanitation standards and ensuring strict compliance with environmental norms.

Major administrative overhaul

To ensure better accountability and efficiency, the project introduces key administrative changes within the railway system. Responsibility for station cleanliness has been shifted from the Commercial Department to the Mechanical Department, while the Engineering Department will now oversee sanitation in railway colonies, replacing the Health Department.

Additionally, a private agency has been assigned the dual responsibility of maintaining cleanliness in the Tatanagar and Adityapur railway colonies and ensuring that all collected waste is processed at the new plant. This move is expected to resolve long-standing complaints regarding garbage accumulation near residential areas.

Lessons from past failures

This is not the first attempt to establish a waste management facility in Tatanagar. Approximately five years ago, a similar plant was set up outside the station premises but eventually became defunct due to poor management by the operating agency. The site has since been repurposed as a parking area.

Learning from past shortcomings, railway officials are optimistic that improved departmental coordination and the oversight of the EnHM department will ensure the long-term success of the new project.
