Jamshedpur, May 30: The redevelopment of Tatanagar railway station is set to gather momentum from June, with the demolition of over 100 quarters in the Loco Colony marking the first phase of the project. While physical work has not yet begun, the Indian Railways had issued a public announcement in May, urging residents and shopkeepers to vacate the area in anticipation of the redevelopment campaign’s launch.

The announcement has triggered anxiety among more than 4,000 affected households and shopkeepers residing in various colonies around the station. The looming demolition includes several decades-old settlements such as Burmamines Carriage Colony, Railway Traffic Colony, Engineering Colony, Sanjay Nagar, Station TOP area, Gudri Bazaar, Jugsalai Station Road and Golpahari.

In response to the ultimatum, some residents have started relocating, while shopkeepers are seeking clarity on the final boundary of the redevelopment project to make alternative arrangements. Many residents and traders have appealed to railway authorities and public representatives, requesting that demolition be limited to essential areas to avoid widespread displacement and livelihood loss.

Railway officials, including DRM Tarun Huriya of Chakradharpur Division, have held strategy meetings with the engineering and land departments to assess the site and finalize the master plan. The project includes demolition of the station’s main building, reconfiguration of track alignments and integration of the main and washing lines.

The railway administration has also served demolition notices to Sanjay Nagar under Bagbeda Police Station. During a recent inspection visit, General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra issued special directives to expedite preparations. Despite ongoing appeals from locals, the campaign is expected to commence on schedule, intensifying pressure on affected communities to vacate.
