Tata Steel Wage Talks Reach Crucial Stage, Union Presses for Allowance Arrears

Jamshedpur: Negotiations over the new wage agreement (Grade Revision) for nearly 10,000 Tata Steel employees have gathered momentum as two rounds of crucial discussions were held between the company management and the top leadership of the Tata Workers’ Union on Monday.

The first round of talks took place from 10 am to 1 pm, followed by a second session from 4 pm to 6:30 pm. During the discussions, the union strongly advocated for extending arrears on enhanced allowances to Tata Steel employees, citing the recently concluded wage settlement at the Tinplate Division as a model.

The demand has gained significance after the landmark agreement at Tata Steel’s Tinplate Division, where both new and existing employees were granted arrears not only on basic pay and Dearness Allowance (DA) but also on all revised allowances. The settlement reportedly provided employees with a one-time financial benefit ranging from ₹1.80 lakh to ₹4 lakh.

With the Tata Steel wage agreement pending since January 1, 2025, union leaders argued that adopting a similar formula could result in employees receiving arrears on increased allowances for the entire 17-month period of delay.

While discussions on allowance arrears are said to have progressed positively, a deadlock continues over the contentious issue of “DA per point”. Sources indicated that differences between the management and the union on this matter remain unresolved, preventing the finalisation of the wage pact.

To break the impasse, Tata Steel’s Chief People Officer, Atrayee Sanyal, is expected to visit Jamshedpur on June 22 for further discussions. Union and management representatives are hopeful that a consensus can be reached during the meeting, paving the way for the signing of the final wage agreement on June 24 or 25.

Meanwhile, signs of internal dissatisfaction have surfaced within the Tata Workers’ Union over the handling of the negotiations. Several office bearers have reportedly expressed concern over the lack of transparency regarding the progress of talks. According to sources, detailed information about the negotiations is being shared with only a limited number of office bearers, leading to resentment among others who feel excluded from the decision-making process.

Despite the emerging internal differences, employees across the company remain focused on the outcome of the wage revision talks, which are expected to determine substantial financial benefits and shape industrial relations at Tata Steel in the coming years.
