Tata Steel Wage Revision Must Safeguard Future of Employees: RC Jha at TWU Meeting

Jamshedpur: The Tata Workers Union held a crucial committee meeting at the Michael John Auditorium on Friday, where members engaged in intense discussions and question-answer sessions regarding the ongoing Tata Steel wage revision agreement and several other employee issues.

Addressing the gathering, Tata Workers Union committee member RC Jha detailed the importance of the wage revision settlement, career growth, allowances, common wage structure, and future employee security. He appealed to all union members and employees to remain united during the negotiation process and avoid unnecessary negativity on social media.

Jha stated that most workers prioritize wage revision above all else, while others view it with even greater importance because it directly impacts the future of employees and their families. He thanked the union leadership and executive committee members for their efforts in resolving surplus pool issues and ensuring worker rehabilitation.

“Except for a few people, various departments have absorbed most workers from the surplus pool. The collective efforts of the union leadership and committee members made this possible,” Jha said while expressing gratitude towards the union office bearers.

Speaking about the ongoing wage revision talks, Jha noted that all elected union representatives are negotiating on behalf of nearly 11,000 employees. Referring to the previous union election, he stated that employees placed their trust in the elected representatives, who must now protect that confidence.

At a crucial Tata Workers Union committee meeting, member RC Jha emphasized that the ongoing Tata Steel wage revision must safeguard the long-term financial security of younger employees

“In the last election, wage revision stood out as one of the biggest issues. Employees trusted the elected team with the responsibility of negotiation. Time will decide how successfully we protect this trust,” he remarked.

Jha emphasized that the current wage revision could become historic if all stakeholders work together with unity and responsibility. He urged members not to indulge in negative commentary or unnecessary criticism on social media platforms during the negotiation period.

“I have been associated with this organisation since 1997 and have witnessed several wage revisions. This negotiation matters immensely not only for the present employees but also for future generations,” he said.

During his speech, Jha highlighted the disparities between NS Grade and Steel Grade employees. He appreciated the union leadership’s previous efforts to reduce the gap through various allowances, but requested further corrective steps during the current agreement.

“Earlier settlements improved several allowances. This time, we should take another small step by increasing the rate by at least three percent for everyone. If Steel Grade workers receive DA benefits in percentage terms, then NS Grade workers should receive similar benefits,” he demanded.

He also raised the issue of the Minimum Guaranteed Benefit (MGB/MGV) and urged the negotiating committee to increase the rate for NS Grade workers by at least 50 percent to achieve better parity.

Jha highlighted another major issue: the lack of career growth opportunities for non-officer category employees under the common wage structure system. He pointed out that while officers enjoy multiple levels and promotional opportunities, workers face stagnation due to limited grades.

“In the earlier days, workers and supervisors had many more grades. Today, those opportunities have shrunk significantly. Officers still have multiple impact levels and categories, but the system restricts workers to very limited grades,” he said.

Jha proposed increasing the number of blocks and grades for workers so that talented employees could secure better career progression opportunities.

“We should execute this agreement carefully so that it does not negatively affect future generations. Whatever differences exist, everyone must come together for the sake of the employees and the future of the organisation,” he said.
