Jamshedpur FC Star Nikhil Barla Celebrates Dream India Call-Up Ahead of Unity Cup in London

Jamshedpur: Nikhil Barla always dreamed of pulling on the Indian jersey. Now, after receiving his first Senior National Team call-up for the Unity Cup in London, the 22-year-old Jamshedpur FC left-back is still processing the moment.

“It’s unreal,” Barla said from the national team camp. “I started kicking a ball in Khunti, and wearing the India jersey was always the target. When the call came, I just sat quietly for a few minutes. This is for my family, my coaches at Jamshedpur FC (Tata Football Academy), and everyone in Jharkhand who backed me.”

Barla is currently training under head coach Khalid Jamil as India prepares for its second match of the Unity Cup. He described the step up to international football as a sharp jump in pace and intensity, but credited the seniors and staff for helping him settle quickly.

“The level here is different,” Barla said. “We are preparing to face teams with better FIFA ranks and this is a huge opportunity to learn and shape my football. The coaching staff expects you to take responsibility, and I’m learning every session.”

The squad has approached preparation for the next fixture with meticulous care. “The first match gave us a lot to learn from. Now we just need to follow the coach’s plan.”

The call-up also reunites Barla with Jamil, who previously coached him at Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League. The defender noted that this familiarity gives him a major boost. “Coach Jamil knows my game, and he’s always backed young players who work hard. Reuniting with him at the national level feels like a full-circle moment.”

Barla offered a message for aspiring footballers back home in Jharkhand: “Believe that it’s possible. I was once playing on the grounds in Ranchi, just like you. Stay consistent, respect the process, and don’t skip the basics. Fitness, discipline, and mindset matter as much as talent. If I can reach here from Khunti, so can you.”

India’s Unity Cup campaign continues in London this week, as Jamil’s side looks to build on lessons from the opening game. Barla hopes to make his senior international debut during the tournament.
