Tata Steel Q3 sales volume climbs 9.4%

Jamshedpur, Jan 13: Tata Steel the sixth largest steel producer in the world posted Q3 FY14 Key Production & Sales Figure today.

Company registered Hot Metal production of 2.31 million tonnes which is up by 1.6 percent y-o-y and Crude Steel production of 2.16 million tonnes, up by 3.7 percent y-o-y for Q3 FY14 (Q3). Saleable Steel production was higher by 3.9 percent y-o-y to 2.15 million tonnes and Sales increased by 9.4 percent y-o-y to 2.06 million tonnes.

Steel major reported a 9.4 per cent increase in sales volumes to 2.06 million tonnes from its Indian operations in the October-December quarter.

The private sector steel major had reported sales of 1.88 million tonnes in the corresponding quarter a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

“Flat product saleable steel production was best ever in Q3 at 1.48 million tonnes (previous best 1.46 million tonnes in Q4 FY’13),” Tata Steel said.

Flat products such as hot-rolled coil and cold-rolled coil are used in automotive, heavy machinery, pipes and tubes, packaging and appliances sectors.

Tata Steel had reported sales volumes of 2.03 million tonnes and production of 2.2 million tonnes of saleable steel during the second quarter of this financial year. Tata Steel’s sales in April-December period stood at 6.1 million tonnes while production of saleable steel during this period was 6.5 million tonnes.

The performance of the newly commissioned facilities under the 3MTPA expansion included Pellet Plant which reached its rated capacity in Q3 and has produced more than 3.1 million tonnes of pellet YTD.

I Blast Furnace produced 2.3 million tonnes of Hot Metal YTD while LD#3 & TSCR reached its rated capacity in Q3 and have produced 1.6 million tonnes YTD.

Slowdown in economy and sharp decline in imports lead to the deceleration in India’s steel consumption. India’s steel consumption grew by only 0.5% to 53.789 million tonnes during April-December period of 2013 as against 53.52 million tonnes last year.

At current scenario import of steel showed a downward trend at 4.099 million tonnes while exports were up by 9.5% to 4.136 million tonnes during the period.
