Tata Steel organises Sports Mela for female employees

Jamshedpur, Jan 6: The Sports department of Tata Steel in collaboration with Steel Women’s Aspirational Team Initiative (SWATI) – a women empowerment committee of the Company organised ‘Sports Mela’ today at JRD Tata Sports Complex exclusively for Tata Steel female employees.

The aim behind this event is to provide a platform to engage the women workforce and create awareness about SWATI and good Health.

The event was inaugurated by Avneesh Gupta, Principal Executive Officer (PEO), Tata Steel. Addressing the gathering, he said ‘I am glad to see that SWATI and Sports Department has given such a great platform to our lady employees to excel in different sporting discipline. The event itself is a great idea to engage such a large women workforce and I wish everyone the very best’.

Present on the occasion Charles Borromeo, Head, Sports Department, Tata Steel said that this is one of such sporting event where an overwhelming responce by lady colleagues from different locations of the company was seen. He further added, ‘Our sincere thanks to SWATI for organising a sporting event of this magnitude.

These are events which give the ladies of the Company to emerge fitter, smarter and a lot more confident. We aim to host this event on a much larger scale every year’.

Delving over the history of SWATI, Mrs Chandra Sharan, Organising Chairperson, Sports Mela said that SWATI began as women empowerment cell in 2006 which was named as SWATI in 2009.

Female employees from Raw Material locations such as Jharia, Sukinda, West Bokaro and Noamundi are members of SWATI along with lady workforce at Jamshedpur. Recently a team of SWATI completed a trekking expedition to Uttarkashi.

The Sports department received more than 400 nominations for the event out of which 50 were from Raw Material Division. The participation have been divided into different age groups of 18-30, 30-40, 40-50 and 50-60.

The Sports Mela included various sporting events such as 100 m race, 200 m walk, 50 m One leg, Volleyball Throw, Ping Pong ball Throw, 50 m Spoon & Marble, Tug of War etc.

The prizes were given away to the contestants by Mrs Ruchi Narendran.
