Tata Steel Jamshedpur: Brainstorming session on use of digital & Artificial Intelligence in green steel production

Tata Steel, IIM hosts conference on Green & Sustainable Ironmaking, over 260 delegates attend

Jamshedpur, Jan 18: Tata Steel, in collaboration with The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), organised an International Conference on Green & Sustainable Ironmaking on January 17-18, 2024, at United Club, Jamshedpur.

Over 260 delegates from India and abroad attended the event. Brigadier Arun Ganguly (Retd.), Secretary General of Indian Institute Metals (IIM), Ashok Kumar, Chairman, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, Rajiv Mangal, Vice President, Safety, Health, and Sustainability, Tata Steel, Uttam Singh, Vice President, Iron Making, Tata Steel, Padmapal, Chief Blast Furnaces, Tata Steel and Chairman ICGSI conference and Debaprasad Chakraborty, Chief Iron Making Technology, Tata Steel and Convenor of ICGSI, inaugurated the conference on January 17.

The two-day event aimed at addressing crucial themes related to decarbonization strategies within blast furnace operations, waste utilization, and advancements in ironmaking technologies. The conference gathered professionals in the field of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and blast furnace technology along with technology suppliers, designers, researchers, technologists, academicians, students, technical consultants, and advocates for environmental sustainability.

The event witnessed several keynote speeches on these themes by Dr Atanu Ranjan Pal, CTO, Tata Steel, Christian Hoffman from Mckinsey, and Dr Ashok Kumar from Tata Steel, UK. A panel discussion amongst industry professionals on the topic “Benchmarking for identifying best practices towards green steel making” was also conducted during the conference.

Key themes explored during the conference included decarbonization strategies within blast furnace operations, effective utilization of process waste and lower grade raw materials, Clever Carbon and digital & Artificial Intelligence in green steel production, potential for green steel production now and in the future, value realization through Net zero implementation as well as carbon capture and utilization methodologies.
