Jamshedpur, August 9: Tata Workers Union has formally approached Tata Steel management regarding this year’s bonus agreement. Union President Sanjeev Chaudhary Tunnu has sent an official letter to the company’s leadership, urging them to initiate discussions and reach a swift decision on the bonus structure. This move is expected to kickstart negotiations soon.
While the basic formula for calculating bonuses has been predetermined, there’s potential for adjustments in the coming year. However, employees might see a reduction in their bonuses due to the company’s lower profitability in the 2023-2024 fiscal year compared to the previous period, despite increased productivity. Additionally, safety-related compensation is likely to be withheld following an increase in workplace fatalities and Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR) incidents.
The upcoming agreement will follow last year’s model, which extended the previous bonus formula through the 2023-24 financial year. This formula considers factors such as 1.5 percent of profit, profit per tonne of saleable steel, productivity per tonne of crude steel produced annually per person, and safety metrics like LTIR.
In the previous year, management initially allocated 298.82 crore rupees for bonuses, later increasing it by 15.88 crore rupees at the union’s request, totaling 314.70 crore rupees distributed among 11,676 employees. The average bonus was 159,738 rupees, with amounts varying based on employee grade.
