Tata Motors Bags 3,400+ Electric Commercial Vehicle Orders in India

MUMBAI (IANS): Tata Motors announced on Sunday that it has secured orders for over 3,400 electric commercial vehicles (eCVs). The massive order spans across the freight, logistics, and passenger transportation segments, signalling that India’s commercial sector is rapidly shifting from pilot projects to large-scale EV adoption.

The Breakdown: Where the EVs are Heading

The total order pool of 3,400+ vehicles is diversified across various weight classes and public transit needs:

  • Small Commercial Vehicles (SCVs) & Pick-ups: ~2,000 units (Targeting last-mile delivery and intra-city logistics)
  • Trucks: ~900 units (Targeting intermediate and heavy freight)
  • Buses: ~500 units (Targeting public and passenger mobility)

The auto major stated that these vehicles will be deployed across a wide array of applications. Key sectors include e-commerce, logistics, FMCG/FMCD distribution, cement, steel, mining, and airport tarmac operations.

Moving Beyond the ‘Early-Adoption’ Phase

According to Tata Motors, this surge in orders reflects a profound shift in market sentiment. Electric mobility is no longer just an experimental trial for corporations; it is becoming a core component of daily, large-scale operations.

“The growing order book strengthens our position in the country’s electric commercial vehicle market and supports India’s transition towards zero-emission mobility,” the company said in a statement.

A Growing Green Portfolio

Tata Motors has aggressively expanded its electric lineup over the past year to cater to diverse industrial needs:

  • Last-Mile & Intra-City: Covered by the Ace Pro EV, Ace EV, and Intra EV models.
  • Heavy-Duty Freight: Expanded via the Ultra EV range, alongside specialized heavy-lifters like the Prima EV 55T tractor and Prima EV 28T tipper designed for mining and construction.
  • Passenger Mobility: Driven by the Starbus EV and Ultra EV buses for urban and inter-city transit.

Tata’s Existing EV Footprint

This new order adds to an already massive zero-emission fleet operating across India. Tata Motors currently has more than 3,800 electric buses on Indian roads, which have cumulatively covered over 55 crore (550 million) kilometres. Additionally, over 17,000 Tata electric SCVs are already operational, solidifying the automaker’s dominant position in the country’s commercial EV landscape.
