Jamshedpur, March 19: Raising serious concerns over the ongoing drinking water crisis in Mango, Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has urged the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner to ensure immediate tanker-based water supply in areas that have been deprived of piped water for the past 10–15 days.
Roy highlighted the distress of residents by sharing their complaints via WhatsApp and social media platform X, pointing out a stark contrast between ground reality and the government’s earlier claims in the Assembly. He noted that while the state government had asserted that the Mango Municipal Corporation was ensuring uninterrupted water supply, several neighborhoods continue to face acute shortages.
According to Roy, localities such as Post Office Road, Prahlad Nagar, Chhatai Colony, areas behind Anand Vihar Flats, and adjoining lower settlements have not received drinking water for days. Even Ramakrishna Colony reportedly experienced extended disruption in supply.
He criticized civic officials for their lack of sensitivity, alleging that residents are routinely met with excuses and assurances instead of concrete action. In many areas, water is supplied briefly—sometimes as late as 1:00–1:30 AM—for barely ten minutes, making it nearly impossible for households to store adequate quantities.
Roy further pointed out that a significant portion of Mango’s water—approximately 1.2 lakh litres daily—is being diverted to MGM Medical College and Hospital. However, a recent statement by the state’s Urban Development Minister revised this figure to 72,000 litres. He questioned the planning behind operationalizing the hospital without a dedicated water supply system, forcing reliance on municipal resources.
With groundwater levels depleting and hand pumps failing, residents are reportedly compelled to purchase water from areas like Sakchi and Bistupur. In view of the escalating crisis, Roy has called upon the district administration to direct the municipal body to prepare a locality-wise list and deploy water tankers systematically in all affected areas.
He warned that continued inaction could trigger public outrage against the administration and the municipal corporation, holding the latter accountable for any fallout.
