Tata Motors Jamshedpur employees get record Rs 19,750 wage hike

Jamshedpur: Thousands of employees at the Tata Motors plant in Jamshedpur received a festive boost as the management and Tata Motors Workers Union finalized a grade revision agreement on Thursday. The agreement brings a record increase of Rs 19,750 in employees’ total remuneration.

The deal was sealed after negotiations in which the union opposed the management’s proposal for a six-year term. Following discussions, both sides agreed on a four-year term, in line with previous agreements.

Soon after the final round of talks, Union President Shashi Bhushan Prasad and General Secretary R.K. Singh were greeted with celebration by workers. Employees lifted their leaders on their shoulders and welcomed them with abir and gulal. A procession led by the union leaders moved to the union office, where they received a grand reception with the beats of dhol-nagaras. Workers described the agreement as a New Year gift ahead of the Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri.

As per the agreement, the Rs 19,750 hike will be implemented in four phases over the next four years. Additionally, since the deal was finalized before the March 31 deadline, all 7,321 permanent employees will receive a one-time lump sum payment of Rs 25,000.

The signing ceremony took place in a cordial atmosphere in the presence of senior union leaders, including president Shashi Bhushan Prasad and general secretary R.K. Singh, along with key officials from the management who joined via video conferencing.

Labour department representatives also attended the proceedings, underscoring the importance of the agreement.

Celebrations erupted soon after the signing, as union leaders were greeted by a large gathering of enthusiastic workers outside the plant’s main gate.

The atmosphere turned festive, with music, processions, and fireworks marking what many described as a “double celebration” coinciding with the ongoing festive season of Navratri, the Hindu New Year, and the upcoming Eid.

The agreement introduces a comprehensive overhaul of wages, benefits, and career progression frameworks.

Employees will see an average salary increase of Rs 19,750, applicable across categories.
Healthcare benefits have been significantly enhanced. Under the revised medical support scheme, coverage has been increased from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, while referral assistance has been raised to Rs 6 lakh, taking the total potential benefit to Rs 11 lakh.

Retired employees will also see their mediclaim coverage rise from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
Other benefits include early eligibility for long-service awards, improved canteen facilities with fresh milk tea, and enhanced home loan eligibility of up to Rs 5 lakh.

Union leaders described the agreement as “historic,” emphasizing that it reflects months of intensive negotiations and incorporates suggestions from workers across levels.
The development has sparked optimism among employees, while similar grade revision discussions are reportedly gaining momentum at Tata Cummins, raising expectations across the industrial workforce in Jamshedpur.
