Jamshedpur, May 26: AJSU Party president Sudesh Mahato may be on the way to become a minister in Jharkhand state Cabinet. Having won a seat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, the party is also eyeing a berth in the Union Cabinet.
Party insiders said the newly-elected AJSU MP Chandra Prakash Choudhary may stake claim to become Minister of State at the Centre. After his election as MP, a berth has fallen vacant in the Jharkhand Cabinet. AJSU is also likely to claim this berth. Senior MLA Rajkishore Mahato or Ramchandra Sahis are likely candidates to fill this vacancy.
Although Sudesh Mahato is currently not a member of Jharkhand Assembly, he may still become a state minister. He will have to win Assembly election within six months to remain minister. But if the Assembly is dissolved within this period, he will no longer have to face elections. Earlier, Hemendra Pratap Dehati had become a minister in the state despite not being an MLA.
AJSU spokesperson Devsharan Bhagat said the party was ready to discharge any responsibility it is given at the Centre or in the state. Any decision regarding claim for Cabinet berths would be taken by the party president, he said.
According to Advocate General of Jharkhand Ajit Kumar, anyone can become minister in the state Cabinet, provided they are elected as an MLA within six months.
