St. Joseph Convent School’s students explore science at CSIR-NML Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Aug 29: The CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, organized a laboratory visit for 86 students and 7 teachers from St. Joseph’s Convent High School, Ghatsila, under the CSIR-Jigyasa Virtual Laboratory project. The programme aimed at fostering scientific curiosity and introducing young learners to the world of research and innovation.

The day began with an inaugural session where Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director of CSIR-NML, delivered the welcome address. He highlighted NML’s role in India’s growth through 75 years of technological development and pioneering contributions.

This was followed by an address from Dr. Sarmistha Sagar, Chief Scientist and Head of IMDC, who spoke on the institute’s significant research and development work. Later, Dr. Animesh Jana, Senior Scientist at IMDC, explained the objectives of the Jigyasa Programme, stressing the importance of connecting scientists with school students to encourage scientific learning.

During the visit, the students explored several research laboratories, including the Applied and Analytical Chemistry Division, creep testing facilities, non-destructive testing of metals, e-waste recycling, and brass melting units. Demonstrations of DIY kits further added to their interactive learning experience.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and group photographs. Students and teachers expressed great satisfaction with the exposure, noting that the visit broadened their understanding of scientific research and inspired them to think innovatively.
