Sports fraternity lends a helping hand for former Asian Games cyclist Swaran Singh

Jamshedpur, July 18: The financial support for the former Asian Games cyclist Swaran Singh who has been forced to work as a security guard has started pouring in. Efforts of Amar Singh, who retired from Tata Steel Sports Department as Manager sports in the year 2002 has brought fruitful results.

Singh who has been in town since March came to know about the poor economic condition of Swaran Singh, who is also an international cyclist representing India in the 1970 Asian Games at Bangkok with him.

To get things in order for Swaran, Satbir Singh, former secretary, Jharkhand Cycling Association, Amar Singh activated their network of old retired cyclists and other sportspersons and got funds assistance for Swaran. Money has come for assistance from local Jamshedpur cyclists and Indian cyclists from other states of about One lakh rupees. This fund raiser was initiated by Satbir Singh and Amar Singh together.

The financial assistance even came from cyclists in America through personal contact of Amar Singh who initiated the same for a noble cause to assist his fellow cyclist. Amarjeet Singh, Piara Singh and Charanjeet Singh all three brothers top ex-cyclists  and coaches of Kurukshetra Haryana, Piara Singh and Charanjeet also worked as national coaches of Indian camps , who are now settled in the USA have sent an amount of One lakh.

Amar Singh, who has been director administration of Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi  from 2007 to 2011 has played a pivotal role in getting this arranged as a small token to assist his colleagues during tough times. He himself has been a great sportsman who represented India in 3 Asian games in cycling from 1970, 1974 and 1978. He is also an Arjuna awardee and been a chief national coach too for a long period from 1979 to 1986,2013, high performance advisor and coach SAI 2016 to 2018.  He is settled in Canada with his two sons. Currently he is associated with the sports authority of India   as coordinator national cycling academies for Khelo India .
