Jamshedpur: Ichagarh MLA Sadhucharan Mahato on Wednesday announced to launch ‘Jal Satyagraha Andolan’ from 7th March onwards under the banner of Chandil Bandh Vishthapit Ekta Manch, a body of displacement victims affected by Chandil dam construction, in support of the various demands of the displaced families.
Speaking to scribes at Nirmal Guest House, Mahato demanded that the compensation amount given to the families displaced by the Swarnarekha Multi Purpose (SMP) Project should be revised.
He said the SMP itself was revised five times. “Just the way the estimated cost of the entire project was revised, the compensation amount agreed to be given to the displacement victims should also undergo a similar revision. This will ensure greater justice for the displacement victims who have been clamouring for fulfillment of their various demands related to their rehabilitation,” said Mahato.
“We appeal to the state government to resolve the issue by holding talks prior to the agitation programme. It will be better if the issue is resolved through a dialogue between the government and the displacement victims, or else several thousands of people will also become a part of the agitation in search for justice,” said Mahato.
The legislator alleged that the survey to be conducted by the state government had not taken place in a proper manner. So far, only 13,771 families have been identified as displaced families by the government. In reality, this number could be anything between 22,000 and 25,000, he said.
Mahato said the estimate of the said scheme was Rs 129 crore in the beginning. Now the estimate has been revised to more than Rs 6613 crore. He demanded that the task of investigating into the matter should be assigned to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He said the government should also conduct survey.
Among those present on the occasion included Jamshedpur Mahanagar unit president of BJP Dinesh Kumar and Amarjeet Singh Raja.
