Six Drown in Ganga During Ritual at Ballia

Balia (IANS): A ritual ceremony turned into a tragedy at Shivrampur Ghat on Sunday morning as six people, including four teenage girls, drowned in the Ganga River. The victims, members of a family from Kalyanipur village, had gathered at the riverbank under the Fefna police station area for a ceremony.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when one person slipped while bathing, and three others attempted a rescue. Two additional youths jumped into the water to save the group, but the strong currents of the Ganga swept all of them away. While police confirmed the rescue of two girls, the others remain missing.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Usman stated that local fishermen and fire brigade teams are currently searching for the missing individuals. Additionally, an SDRF team is traveling from Gorakhpur to assist in the operation.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the accident and directed officials to expedite rescue work. He instructed authorities to reach the spot immediately and ensure every possible measure is taken to locate the missing family members.
