Jamshedpur, Dec 5: Simone Tata, noted business leader and mother of Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, who passed away today was a pioneering force in India’s beauty and personal care industry, she is widely credited with transforming Lakmé into one of the country’s most trusted and iconic consumer brands.
Her contribution to the Tata Group and Indian enterprise continues to be remembered as path-breaking, laying the foundation for modern brand-building in India.
Simone Tata passed away on Friday at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. She was 95.
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Simone Tata came to India in the 1950s and went on to become one of the most influential women in Indian business.
She joined Lakmé in 1961, when the company was still in its infancy, and steadily transformed it into India’s most trusted cosmetics brand at a time when the market was dominated by foreign products.
Under her visionary leadership, Lakmé evolved from a fledgling enterprise into a household name synonymous with quality, elegance, and Indian identity. She later played a pivotal role in expanding the Tata Group’s consumer footprint, eventually becoming the Chairperson of Trent Ltd., where she helped build the much-loved Westside retail chain.
Simone Tata’s sharp business acumen, deep understanding of consumer behaviour, and instinctive sense of branding made her one of the earliest champions of modern marketing in India.
Her work laid the foundation for the country’s organised beauty and retail sectors, inspiring generations of women professionals and entrepreneurs.
Remembered for her grace, quiet determination, and visionary leadership, she leaves behind a legacy that continues to shape India’s consumer culture.
She is survived by her family, including her son Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts.
Industry sources said that Simone Tata had visited Jamshedpur during her tenure as a leading figure in the Tata Group, where she interacted with executives and employees of Tata companies and reviewed key initiatives across the city.
Her visit was marked by insightful discussions on consumer product expansion and organisational development, reflecting her sharp business acumen.
She also appreciated Jamshedpur’s unique industrial ecosystem and its culture of innovation, describing it as an important pillar of the Tata legacy.
As India mourns her passing, the nation also celebrates a woman who changed the way Indians saw beauty, style, and modern retail — forever.
