Jamshedpur, April 9: A unique blend of spirituality and modern engineering is taking shape in Uttar Pradesh’s Vrindavan, where the ambitious ‘Chandrodaya Mandir’ is under construction. Once completed, it is expected to become the world’s tallest spiritual centre. The project is being developed by ISKCON Bengaluru, with significant technical support from Tata Steel.
The temple is planned to rise to a height of 210 metres (around 700 feet) with nearly 70 floors, making it almost three times taller than the iconic Qutub Minar. Designed in a pyramid-like structure, the temple will have a deep foundation extending about 55 feet below the ground. Experts associated with the project claim that the scale of the foundation is among the largest for any structure of this kind.
Engineers have designed the temple with a long-term vision of durability and safety. The structure is expected to last for up to 1,000 years and is being built to withstand earthquakes of up to 8 on the Richter scale. In addition, it will be capable of resisting strong cyclonic winds reaching speeds of up to 170 kilometres per hour, ensuring resilience against extreme weather conditions.
A key contribution to the project has come from Tata Steel’s Industrial By-Products Management Division (IBMD), which has supplied a specialised construction material known as ‘Tata Dureco’. This material is produced from LD slag, a by-product generated during the steel-making process. It offers higher compressive strength compared to natural stone, making it ideal for heavy-duty construction projects.
Apart from strength, the material is also considered environmentally friendly as it reduces the need for quarrying natural stones, thereby helping conserve natural resources. It is also more cost-effective and ensures better bonding with concrete, which reduces the chances of cracks in the structure over time.
According to Dipankar Dasgupta, Executive-in-Charge of IBMD, around 50 tonnes of Tata Dureco have been supplied for the temple so far. He noted that the project reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The development is also a matter of pride for Jamshedpur, as the city’s industrial expertise is contributing to the foundation of what is set to become a globally significant spiritual landmark.
