Shorts 2015 to focus on contemporary issues

Jamshedpur, Nov. 27: Contemporary issues will be on focus at Shorts 2015, a shot film festival, which would relate to the common man and create awareness on burning issues, social evils and other problems in society, said Tathagata Bhattacherjee, director of the shot film �Jihad� and CEO of Take 5 Communications.

The annual short film festival, which has been providing platform to the budding filmmakers of Jharkhand, is back. This year �SHORTS 2015� organized by Jamshedpur-based SPPE (Society for Promotion of Professional Excellence) and Kolkata-based Take 5 Communications will be held on November 28 and 29 at Centre for Excellence (CFE).

Talking about the festival, Tathagata Bhattacherjee said, �There is a huge pool of talented filmmakers in Jharkhand and what they need is a platform to showcase their skills which we have been providing them since the year 2008.�

Short film is the way towards commercial big budget films and �Shorts� has provided this to several of the professional film makers who are currently working in Bollywood and Tollywood, Bhattacherjee said addressing a press conference at CFE on Friday.

He further informed that every year they come up with contemporary and burning issues of the society and �Shorts 2015� will have a 7-minute documentary on �Jihad� directed by him. This film focuses on the misinterpretation of religion.

Protection of wild life, women�s self defense, and mental health, women empowerment, depression, child discrimination and physical disability are some of the issues that will be shown in this film festival

Goutam Shankar, chief coordinator of �Shorts�, said that this film festival has a unique blend of films by professionals, budding and student film makers. Altogether 23 films will be screened this year, the duration of each film ranges from just 2 minutes to 30 minutes; languages being Hindi, English, Bengali, Punjabi and silent films. There is a film in foreign language as well, in Arabic. Fifteen out of the 23 films are from Jamshedpur.

La Martiniere for Boys, a leading school in Kolkata, will be participating with their student film �Through the Prism� and there is the city�s very own Karim City College of Mass Communication, which will be present with its short film titled �U.S.P.� One of Jamshedpur�s leading schools DBMS English School is also a participant with their film �Nobody�s Child.�

�Mind Matters� by Abhishek Ganguli, �Bondhu�by Debajyoti Batabyal, �Hatasha� by Kiron Mukherjee, �Khwaish� by Md. Nizam and �R.I.P. MAGGIE� by Saurabh Suman Jha are some of the films made by professionals that will be screened at the festival. �Shorts 2015� will be inaugurated by Pragya Tripathy, a filmmaker and a national award winner from Jamshedpur.
