Ranchi, April 22: Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) witnessed a security breach as a prisoner, Shyam Kishore Chaudhary (32), managed to escape from the surgery ward while still in handcuffs. Chaudhary, a resident of Hariharganj in Palamau district, was admitted to RIMS for treatment after swallowing a nail on April 13, referred from Daltonganj Sadar Hospital.
The incident occured after Chaudhary underwent stomach surgery on the same day of his admission. Bariatu police, acting on a complaint filed by Havildar Shanicharva Oraon and Jeetlal Mahato, both assigned to guard Chaudhary, initiated an investigation. Both guards, hailing from the Palamu District Force, had accompanied Chaudhary to RIMS for his medical treatment.
According to Bariatu police, Chaudhary had been shifted from the prisoner ward to the surgery ward on April 16 post-surgery. Security personnel Shanicharva Oraon disclosed that he briefly left his post for a check at five in the morning, while Jitlal Mahato mentioned leaving to procure medicine for an upset stomach from the RIMS dispensary after using the restroom. These absences provided an opportunity for Chaudhary to remove his handcuffs and flee.
Following the escape, Chaudhary reportedly returned to his village. Ranchi Police has alerted Palamau District Police to monitor his movements.
