School shooting: Victim battles for life, police identify neighbor as gun provider

Jamshedpur, June 23: The condition of 17-year-old gunshot victim Sudhanshu Kumar, who is struggling for life at the Tata Main Hospital, continues to be serious. Sudhanshu was shot by a classmate inside the classroom in Dayanand Public School, Jamshedpur, on Wednesday.

Sudhanshu, who is a class XI student of Sakchi-based Dayanand Public School, was shot at and seriously injured by his classmate in the classroom minutes before the assembly session started on Wednesday morning.  A critically injured Sudhanshu, a resident of Mango, was rushed to Tata Main Hospital where he is serious. 

Meanwhile, the police have also succeeded to dig the source from which Sudhanshu’s classmate had procured the pistols used in the firing. Police sources revealed that the Sudhanshu’s classmate, who is accused of firing the shot, had been provided the fire-arms by one of his neighbors, Sunny Singh (24).

Though Sunny is on run, the police have picked up two other youths having criminal background for interrogation into the case.

“The probe is moving in the right direction. During interrogation, the accused student has revealed the name of Sunny Singh, who had provided him the pistols two days ago.

As Sunny has absconded we have picked two of his friends for interrogation for knowing about his whereabouts,” said officer in-charge of Sakchi police station Anjani Kumar Tiwary.  

The office in-charge said it is yet to be established whether the accused student had intentionally fired at his classmate, but Sudhanshu’s father Devendra Kumar Gupta has in an FIR lodged with the Sakchi police alleging that the accused student had fired at his son with an intention to murder.

“We hope to garner more details once Sunny is arrested.  We are sending the accused student to Ghaghidih Central Jail after producing him before a judicial magistrate this afternoon,” said Tiwary.

In reply to a question, Tiwary said they do not consider him as minor as he has failed in the school two or three years.

Meanwhile, Sudhanshu’s condition continues to be serious as the pellet which has between the lungs and spine is yet to be taken out.

Dayanand Public School has decided to bear all the medical expenses of the injured student as the incident took place at the school campus.

Principal Swarna Mishra said that the school has close circuit cameras to keep an eye on students and their movements but still incident took place inside the class room which is away from surveillance.

A day after the shocking incident took place in room no 21, which serves as class XI A on the first floor, the school appeared to be normal. The class of XI A and teachers are praying for Sudhanshu Kumar Gupta, the victim’s early recovery now.

Classmates of Sudhanshu said that they hardly spoke to Sudhanshu and his friend because the latter was repeating class XI and the other boy was new.
