Jamshedpur: Panic gripped the Chhota Govindpur area of Parsudih late Wednesday night after a massive fire broke out at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch. Because the bank remained closed for the Holi holiday, the city narrowly averted a major tragedy.
Swift action from the fire department and timely alerts from local residents prevented the blaze from consuming the bank’s main section.

Smoke from Shutters Alarms Residents
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when neighbors noticed thick black smoke billowing from the bank’s shutters and windows. Realizing the gravity of the situation, villagers immediately notified the Govindpur Police Station and the fire department. Fortunately, the bank premises were empty at the time.
Tata Motors Firefighters Lead the Charge
Units from the Tata Motors Fire Department rushed to the scene upon receiving the alert. Following a strenuous effort, firefighters successfully brought the flames under control. As a safety precaution, the administration evacuated adjacent shops to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring establishments.
Short Circuit Suspected; Lockers Remain Secure
Preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit as the primary cause of the fire. In a major relief for customers, firefighters extinguished the flames before they could reach the main lockers or the cash counter.
Police and Bank Management Launch Inquiry
The Govindpur Police and bank management are currently assessing the extent of the property damage. Officials have requested a detailed report from the bank staff. Police noted that since the branch was closed for Holi, no casualties occurred; however, they admitted the incident could have proven fatal had it occurred on a regular working day.
