Saryu Roy writes to Tata Steel VP seeking revival of Jamshedpur’s Netaji Ambagan Ground

Jamshedpur, Jan 4: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has written to DB Sundara Ramam, Vice President (Corporate Services) of Tata Steel, urging immediate steps to improve the condition of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Ambagan Ground and develop it as a memorial dedicated to the freedom fighter. In his letter, Roy stressed the historical and public importance of the ground, which was renamed after Netaji a few years ago, but is currently in a state of neglect.

Roy pointed out that the ground is being misused for parking buses and vehicles, while a large portion has turned into a scrapyard for old vehicles. He also flagged ongoing illegal encroachments along its edges. “A public space of such significance is suffering neglect and misuse, which is deeply distressing,” he wrote.

The MLA noted that a small memorial with a statue of Netaji exists within the ground. As a local representative, he had earlier ensured beautification of the statue and construction of a canopy over it. After being re-elected, repair and further beautification work at the statue site is being carried out from his MLA fund.

Recalling earlier efforts, Roy said that around 2016–17, the then JUSCO had begun boundary work to protect the ground, but the project was halted midway due to vested interests. With Netaji’s birth anniversary falling on January 23, Roy urged Tata Steel to announce a time-bound plan to restore and develop the ground as a pride site for Jamshedpur.
