Jamshedpur, April 24: The multilingual literary organization ‘Sahyog’ celebrated World Book Day in the Prayag Room of Tulsi Bhavan, marking the occasion with rich tributes to literary giants William Shakespeare and Padma Shri Narendra Kohli.
The program began at 5:00 PM with ceremonial lamp lighting and floral tributes to Shakespeare and Kohli. Distinguished guests were felicitated with robes and souvenirs. The event was presided by Dr. Ragini Bhushan, patron of ‘Sahyog,’ while Dr. Manoj Pathak Aaziz, professor of English at Arka Jain University, graced the occasion as chief guest. Speakers included Sudha Goyal and Dr. Sandhya Sinha.
Dr. Juhi Samarpita, patron of ‘Sahyog,’ welcomed the guests and shared personal anecdotes, highlighting her bond with Narendra Kohli. She recounted Kohli’s trust in her to review his book, Todo Kara Todo overnight for a session at Akshar Kumbh, a memorable moment in her literary journey.
A theatrical presentation by B.Ed. students from DBMS, Arpita Chakraborty, Subhangi Ghosh, and Varsha Srivastava, brought Shakespeare’s iconic plays to life, captivating the audience.
Dr. Sandhya Sinha offered a unique perspective by connecting Shakespeare’s themes with Indian mythology. She emphasized the Indian sensibility within Shakespeare’s works, making them relatable and widely translated across Indian languages.
Sudha Goyal discussed Kohli’s novel, Sairandhri, illuminating Draupadi’s emotional journey during exile and encouraging the audience to explore the novel further.
Chief guest Dr. Aaziz reflected on Shakespeare’s legacy, noting his influence during Queen Elizabeth’s reign and his monumental contribution to the English language despite limited formal education.
The evening concluded with a vote of thanks from ‘Sahyog’ President Dr. Mudita Chandra, who acknowledged the efforts of all contributors in making the event successful. (w/gsd)
