Jamshedpur, Sept 27: Jamshedpur police have achieved a major breakthrough in the sensational Rs 30 lakh loot case reported earlier this month, with the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Chandan Kumar Mandal, from Munger district in Bihar.
The arrest marks a crucial turning point in the investigation, which had gripped the city since the daring daylight heist near Gurudwara Road in Bistupur on September 4.
Mandal, also known by his aliases Saurabh and Chandu, was tracked down to Dhapri Shampur village in Munger, where a police team apprehended him after weeks of surveillance.
A resident of Adityapur’s Saldih Basti, Mandal had fled to his ancestral village in Bihar soon after the crime.
Police recovered Rs 50,000 in cash from his possession at the time of his arrest.
According to police, Mandal played a crucial role in executing the loot. On the day of the incident, he snatched a bag containing Rs 30 lakh in cash from businessman Saket Agarwal and escaped with his associates in a SUV.
The gang first drove to Rammadhia Basti in Adityapur, where they halted briefly before fleeing towards Rajnagar.
Mandal later took his Rs 5 lakh share of the loot and went into hiding.
Bistupur police launched an intensive manhunt immediately after the incident, combining human intelligence with technical tracking methods to trace the gang’s movements.
Their efforts had earlier led to the arrest of four accomplices on September 12.
Interrogation of those suspects provided crucial leads that eventually helped pinpoint Mandal’s location in Munger.
Police officials described Mandal as the “mastermind and most active member” of the criminal network.
During questioning, he reportedly confessed to his role and revealed details about the distribution of the stolen cash.
Station in-charge Alok Kumar Dubey stated that with Mandal’s arrest, the investigation has effectively been completed.
The process of filing a chargesheet in court is underway, and efforts are being made to recover the remaining stolen amount.
The arrest of the kingpin is being hailed as a major success for Jamshedpur police, bringing the high-profile case close to closure and restoring public confidence after the shocking daylight heist.
