Rogue elephant unleashes terror in Jharkhand’s Kolhan, kills 19 in nine days

Chaibasa, Jan 9: The deadly rampage of a rogue tusker in the Kolhan region shows no signs of slowing down.

On Friday morning around 8:30 am, the elephant struck again in Tilokuti village under the Majhgaon block, killing two people in a brutal attack.

Among the victims was Prakash Pan (around 30), whose body was found mutilated, while a seven-year-old child also lost his life in the horrific incident.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the area, with panic gripping villagers as the elephant is still roaming near the settlement instead of retreating into the forest.

Residents fear further attacks at any moment.

According to local villagers, the same tusker has claimed as many as 19 lives across different villages of Kolhan over the past nine days.

Despite the alarming death toll, they allege that neither the forest department nor the district administration has implemented any concrete plan to control or capture the elephant.

Villagers have accused the state forest department of acting only after fatalities occur, saying it has been reduced to merely retrieving bodies rather than preventing deaths.

They claim there is no effective alert system, inadequate deployment of safety personnel, and no serious effort to tranquilise or drive the elephant back into a safe forest zone.

With deaths mounting and fear spreading, serious questions are being raised about the government’s preparedness and response.

People of Kolhan are now asking how long they will continue to live at the mercy of a rogue elephant and an allegedly indifferent system, and whether the administration is waiting for an even bigger tragedy before taking decisive action.
