Jamshedpur, Mar 6: In an alarming trend, even young children studying in primary schools are exhibiting signs of irritability, inattentiveness and behavioural issues, prompting parents to seek help from psychologists. Hospitals like MGM, TMH, Sadar Hospital and private clinics in the city are witnessing an increasing number of cases where parents, often on the advice of schools, are bringing their children for psychological evaluations.
Until recently, psychological consultations were mostly sought for older students struggling academically or behaviourally. However, now even younger children are being taken to doctors due to poor performance in studies or disruptive behaviour.
Schools flagging behavioural concerns
Teachers are noticing behavioural changes, lack of focus and declining academic performance among students. As a result, they are advising parents to consult doctors. Complaints are commonly raised in parent-teacher meetings, urging families to seek medical advice.
Psychologists, including Dr. Deepak Giri from Sadar Hospital and Dr. Keshav from a private clinic, confirm that such cases are increasing. They note that children often struggle with concentration, become excessively restless and disturb classmates.
Parental concerns and medical assessments
Monica Kumari, a mother of a 9-year-old, shared that after receiving repeated complaints about her son’s poor academic results and hyperactivity, his teacher suggested consulting a doctor. Similarly, Neeraj Kumar, whose 14-year-old son consistently performed poorly in school, was advised to seek professional help.
Testing and treatment at TMH
Psychologist Dr. Harshita Biswas explained that IQ tests and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) evaluations are conducted to determine the child’s attention span and activity levels. In some cases, medication is prescribed to help manage symptoms.
TMH doctors confirmed that with timely intervention and proper treatment, many children show significant improvement. Experts emphasize the need for early diagnosis and parental awareness to support children facing mental and behavioural health challenges in today’s fast-paced world.
