Ranchi, June 15: Commuters travelling between Ranchi and Jamshedpur are set to benefit from a major road infrastructure upgrade, as a Rs 214.79-crore overlay project for the 126.497-Km Ranchi–Mahulia (Tata) stretch of National Highway-33 (new NH-43 and NH-18) has received official approval.
The project aims to strengthen and rehabilitate one of Jharkhand’s busiest transport corridors, which connects the state capital Ranchi with the industrial hub of Jamshedpur. The highway witnesses heavy daily movement of commercial vehicles, passenger buses, mineral transport carriers and local traffic, making it a vital economic lifeline for the state.
Under the project, the damaged bituminous surface will be milled and removed, followed by structural strengthening and the laying of fresh Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and Bituminous Concrete (BC) layers. The upgrade is expected to improve road durability, enhance safety standards, reduce travel time and provide a smoother driving experience.
The Ranchi–Tata corridor also serves as a crucial link connecting Jharkhand with Odisha and West Bengal, facilitating the movement of minerals, industrial goods and interstate traffic. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and operational efficiency along the route.
The work has been awarded to Mathura-based SRSC Infra Private Limited in two packages, with construction to be carried out in accordance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards and approved quality-control protocols.
The approval is being attributed to the sustained efforts of Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, who had repeatedly highlighted the deteriorating condition of the highway before the concerned ministries and departments. Seth expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for sanctioning the project.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for June 18, after which construction work will commence. The project is expected to strengthen Jharkhand’s transport infrastructure and provide fresh momentum to regional trade, industrial growth and economic development.
