Ranchi, July 14:Ramesh Bais on Wednesday succeeded Droupadi Murmu as the 10th Governor of Jharkhand by taking oath of office at the Raj Bhavan.
At the Birsa Mandap of the Raj Bhawan Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, Ravi Ranjan administered the oath to him.
Prior to this, chief secretary Sukhdev Singh read the warrant of appointment of Bais issued by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind on July 6 setting the stage for the swearing-in ceremony.
Before his appointment in Jharkhand, he was serving as the Governor of Tripura. He replaces Draupadi Murmu who was the first tribal woman Governor of Jharkhand having served the maximum duration of six years.
Those present on the occasion included Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, cabinet ministers Dr Rameshwar Oraon, Alamgir Alam, Mithilesh Kumar Thakur, Champai Soren, Satyanand Bhokta, Badal Patralekh, Joba Manjhi, Hafizul Hasan and Banna Gupta.
State BJP president Deepak Prakash, Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth, Ranchi MLA CP Singh also graced the occasion.
Senior administrative and police officials including Chief Secretary Sukhdeo Singh and DGP Neeraj Sinha were also present at the function. Ramesh Bais was born on August 2, 1947, in Raipur, Chhatisgarh.
He became an MP from the BJP for the first time from Raipur in 1989 and went on to represent the seat till 2019. He had been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and served as a Union Minister of State (Independent charge) for Environment and Forests during late Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government from 1999.
He was elected to the 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha from Raipur and was also the chief whip of the party in Lok Sabha. Though he was denied a ticket in 2019 Lok Sabha polls but was in July 2019 was appointed as Governor of Tripura and now he has been appointed as Governor of Jharkhand by the President.
Chief minister Hemant Soren extended greetings to Bais by handing him a bouquet after the ceremony. He said that both state government and Raj Bhavan will work together to turn the wheels of development in the state.
BJP MP from Ranchi, Sanjay Seth said that Bais’s long and illustrious political experience will be fruitful for the development of Jharkhand. “We all welcome the new governor and I am sure that his presence here will go a long way in taking the state forward. He has been a long term lawmaker and has immense political experience which will be advantageous for Jharkhand,” he said.
The Governor also planted a sapling inside the Raj Bhawan, Ranchi in the presence of his wife and chief minister Hemant Soren and also took guard of honour.
BJP national vice-president and former chief minister Raghubar Das congratulated the new Governor and said that under the new Governor the constitutional bodies will be protected and prevent the ruling government from becoming tyrannical.
