Railways Revamps Jan Shatabdi Express, Modern Coaches to Offer Enhanced Safety and Comfort

Jamshedpur

In a major boost for daily commuters and travelers between Barbil and Howrah, the Indian Railways has announced a significant upgrade to the coaches of the Jan Shatabdi Express. Under the ongoing initiative to modernize the railway fleet, the conventional coaches are being replaced with advanced LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) rakes, promising a smoother and safer journey for passengers.

Focus on Safety and Speed

The primary highlight of this upgrade is the transition to LHB technology, based on German design. Unlike the traditional Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches, these new coaches are:

  • Anti-Climbing: Designed to prevent coaches from piling up on top of each other in the event of a collision or derailment.
  • Advanced Braking: Equipped with a superior disc-braking system that allows for efficient stopping even at higher speeds.
  • Lightweight Construction: Made of stainless steel and aluminum, allowing the train to maintain higher speeds with greater stability.

Enhanced Passenger Amenities

The internal environment of the Jan Shatabdi Express has been completely redesigned to maximize passenger comfort:

  • Improved Seating: The new coaches feature ergonomically designed seats with better cushioning and more legroom.
  • Climate Control: The AC Chair Car coaches now feature microprocessor-controlled air conditioning to ensure uniform cooling throughout the cabin.
  • Upgraded Interiors: Larger windows for better views, modular bio-toilets for hygiene, and LED lighting have been installed to provide a “premium” feel at affordable rates.
  • Reduced Noise: Better insulation and advanced suspension systems significantly reduce the noise and jerks experienced during the journey.

Increased Capacity

The transition to LHB rakes has also led to a slight increase in the carrying capacity of the train. By optimizing the interior space, the Railways have managed to add extra seats in both the Second Class Chair Car and the AC Chair Car segments, helping to meet the high demand on this popular route.

Commitment to Modernization

Speaking on the development, a senior railway official noted that the goal is to phase out older ICF coaches and standardize LHB rakes across all major express trains. “The Jan Shatabdi is a lifeline for businessmen and students traveling between Tatanagar and Howrah. These upgrades ensure that they receive the best possible service without any hike in the current fare structure,” the official added.
