Railway clears encroachments in Jamshedpur’s Burmamines amid protests

Jamshedpur: The railway administration carried out a major anti-encroachment drive in the Lakdi Tal area of Burmamines on Tuesday, clearing land earmarked for upcoming development projects despite initial resistance from local occupants.

The operation was conducted jointly by the railway’s engineering department, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), local police from Burmamines police station, and a magistrate deputed by the district administration. The drive, however, began nearly 90 minutes behind schedule due to the delayed arrival of security personnel.

Tensions flared briefly as residents, many of whom had been occupying the railway land for years, protested and raised slogans against the administration. The situation was brought under control after officials engaged with the protesters, explaining the proposed development plans and urging cooperation. Several occupants eventually agreed to vacate the premises voluntarily.

Maintaining a firm stance, the authorities pressed ahead with the eviction, demolishing two warehouses and a residential structure using bulldozers. Officials reiterated that illegal occupation of railway land would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to the administration, the clearance drive is part of a broader effort to free up land for future infrastructure projects. Authorities also indicated that similar actions will continue in the coming days to safeguard railway property and ensure that development initiatives proceed without hindrance.
