Sanju Mahato becomes first woman union office bearer

Jamshedpur, June 11: Raghunath Pandey has once again been elected president of the Tata Steel Utilities and Services Union (formerly JUSCO Workers Union). Pandey and his entire team secured a decisive victory, defeating all opposing candidates.

Pandey won the president’s post with 397 votes, defeating his closest rival Parmanand Singh, who secured 214 votes. CDS Krishnan retained his position as General Secretary with 253 votes. Ravi Kant Shukla emerged as the Deputy President with 328 votes, while Amarnath Tiwari was re-elected as Working President with 412 votes. Kamlesh Kumar Singh was elected Treasurer with 345 votes, defeating Neha Upadhyay, who received 250 votes.

Among the vice presidents elected were Akhilesh Kumar Rai with 303 votes, Dinesh Kumar Mahato with 227 votes and Pintu Sharma with 232 votes. In a historic development, Sanju Mahato became the first woman to be elected as a union office bearer, securing the Assistant Secretary post with 303 votes. She was joined by Awadh Kishore Singh, who won the second Assistant Secretary post with 309 votes.

Following the announcement of results, supporters of Raghunath Pandey celebrated enthusiastically, chanting slogans and holding a victory procession late into the night. Speaking after the win, Pandey expressed his gratitude to the workers, stating, “This victory reflects the trust of workers in our leadership and commitment. We will continue striving for their welfare and rights.”

In the committee member elections held zone-wise, several key candidates emerged victorious. Notably, Suraj Singh (Zone 3), Sunil Chaubey (Zone 7) and Jitendra Kumar (Zone 8) were elected unopposed. Other winners include Dhananjay Kumar Mukhi and Praveen Kumar Rai from Zone 1, Rajju Gorai from Zone 2 and Akhilesh Kumar Mishra and Prasannjit Das from Zone 4. In the highly contested Zone 6, Ajit Kumar Mishra, Sumendu Saurabh and Ashutosh Anand secured victories.

The sweeping victory of Pandey and his team highlights a strong mandate from the workers and a significant step toward greater inclusion, marked by the election of a woman office bearer for the first time in the union’s history.
