New Delhi (IANS): President Droupadi Murmu conferred Padma Awards on several distinguished personalities at the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, recognizing their outstanding contributions in fields such as arts, public service, music, literature, and industry.
Bollywood actor Dharmendra received the prestigious Padma Vibhushan posthumously for his exceptional contribution to the arts. His wife and BJP MP Hema Malini accepted the honour on his behalf during the ceremony.
Renowned violinist N. Rajam also received the Padma Vibhushan for her distinguished contribution to Indian classical music.
The President conferred the Padma Bhushan on former Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and noted banker Uday Kotak in recognition of their contributions to public affairs and industry.
The Union Government announced a total of 131 Padma Awards this year, comprising five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards. The list includes 19 women awardees, while 16 honours will be conferred posthumously.
During the first phase of the Civil Investiture Ceremony, President Murmu presented 66 awards, including two Padma Vibhushan, six Padma Bhushan, and 58 Padma Shri honours. Authorities will present the remaining awards during a second ceremony, the date of which will be announced later.
Instituted in 1954, the Padma Awards rank among India’s highest civilian honours and recognize excellence and distinguished service in fields including arts, literature, education, sports, medicine, science, social work, public affairs, and industry.
