One Nation One Election: Election Commission advocates constitutional amendment, calls for new EVMs every 15 years

New Delhi: The concept of “One Nation One Election” has sparked discussions on the need for constitutional changes and logistical adjustments. In a recent development, the Election Commission has informed the Center that if simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies become a reality, the commission would require approximately Rs 10,000 crore every 15 years for the procurement of new ‘Electronic Voting Machines’ (EVMs).
With an estimated 11.80 lakh polling stations needed for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission is emphasizing the importance of periodic upgrades to the voting infrastructure. The proposal suggests a regular replacement cycle for EVMs, ensuring the efficiency and reliability of the electoral process.

The push for One Nation One Election aims to synchronize the electoral calendars of the Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies, streamlining the election process and minimizing disruptions. However, the logistical challenges, including the need for periodic investment in updated technology, highlight the multifaceted considerations involved in implementing such a significant electoral reform.
